Frequently asked questions - Mosaic artworks

How much do you charge?

Of course it's impossible to generalise, and you're best bet is to email me for a price estimate. In the name of being honest & up-front, my rates for mosaic work usually vary between $3,000 to $6,000 per square metre ($300-$600 per square foot) That includes design work, but doesn't include the costs for shipping, installation or the cost to use outside parties (i.e. blacksmith, framers etc.)

As a rule, I ask for 50% of the commission amount up-front with the balance payable prior to shipping/installation. I can tailor payment programmes for larger or commercial projects.

What payment methods are available?

I accept Visa/Mastercard, Paypal, online bank transfers, cheques or money orders subject to bank clearance.

How long do commissions usually take?

My backlog and work programme can vary considerably, and can’t be generalised. I don't like to rush artworks so patience on your part generally is well rewarded!

I always estimate time frames when I provide quotes, and generally adhere to them well. As a rule, orders are handled on a first-come-first-served basis.

Can your mosaics handle beachside and/or freezing conditions?

Beachside conditions are no problem - all my ironwork is treated against rust. Freezing conditions can be a problem for some of my ceramic tiles, so please let me know if you intend to expose your piece to the weather in areas subject to heavy frosts. I can then ensure the correct tesserea are used.

Can your mosaic tables and benchtops be stain-proofed?

All my pieces are sealed with an acrylic coating which prevents penetration of liquid into the grout or tiles. Cleaning is usually as simple as wiping with a damp cloth - made for red wine!

Can you copy a design from your website?

I won’t copy designs I’ve already created, but can usually come up with derivatives to suit your requirements. Many of the early designs could be re-created with finer detail and improved colours.

Can you make a mosaic from my own designs or picture?

Yes. I can use your design or photograph as a starting point, provided it doesn't infringe on another artist's copyright - morally or legally. Some flexibility is usually required on your part to agree on a final design.

Can you forward larger pieces overseas?

Yes. Most of the international couriers will handle my larger pieces by airfreight, and delivery will usually only take a week or two. I prefer not use seamail, due to the time frames and lack of control during transit.
