Community mosaic created with ceramic tiles by the Nhulunbuy township

Artist comment: I was approached by the Nhulunbuy Corporation to conduct classes with kids in the school holidays. Nhulunbuy is very remote (!200kms by car from Darwin) and there was some serious logistical problems holding classes there. We decided instead to create one big mural to which everyone would contribute.

Design is a derivative of a local artist’s work – Nonggirrnga Marawili, (born c. 1939) Madarrpa clan, Yirritja moiety

Mural was broken down into 9 pieces and set up on it’s own workstation. It was fantastic having so much mosaic activity in 1 room – there were 36 students on the first morning. Primarily mural was completed by primary school children down to 6yo – fantastic effort!

The whole town must be proud to have this mural installed in their town hall
